Dr. Yohannes Gedamu is a Senior Lecturer of Political Science in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Georgia Gwinnett College's School of Liberal Arts in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He joined GGC in 2017.

He holds a BA, MA, and PhD in Political Science from Georgia State University, specializing in International and Comparative Politics. His doctoral dissertation is titled "Ethnic Federalism and Authoritarian Survival in Ethiopia."

His research interests span federalism studies, democratization, authoritarian survival, memory politics, human rights, and cybersecurity policy challenges facing developing countries. He holds an additional M.S. in Cybersecurity from Kennesaw State University.

Dr. Gedamu has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, BBC, and Al Jazeera, and has contributed to the World Economic Forum as an agenda writer. He serves on the board of the Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora.

The Politics of Contemporary Ethiopia: Ethnic Federalism and Authoritarian Survival

A comprehensive examination of Ethiopian politics in two major parts: The Foundations to Understanding the Politics of Ethiopia and Ethnic Federalism, an Authoritarian Coalition, and Political Change in Ethiopia. This work argues that the ethnic federal arrangement and continuation of an elite political culture are major factors explaining authoritarianism's persistence in Ethiopia.
